ZAGREB, March 27, 2018 – Abortion is not a matter of point of view, it is the right to adequate protection of women’s sexual and reproductive health, the Women’s Network said on Monday, condemning Health Minister Milan Kujundžić’s statement that the Catholic Church would be involved in drafting a new law on abortion.
Criticising Kujundžić for saying that everyone would be involved in drafting the new law on abortion, the association said it had been waiting for over two weeks for the Health Ministry to respond to its questions about the new law.
The association said that the minister’s statement was contrary to the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).
Under the convention, countries are obliged to prevent socio-cultural views, including religious ones, from hindering women from fully enjoying their rights.
The association reminded the minister that abortion was a woman’s autonomous and free decision and that no one, not even her family or the Church, must be above her freedom and her rights.
