Wine education on the island of Krk.
Krk Tourist Board and Bukaleta Association of Winemakers of the Island of Krk have jointly organized a sommelier workshop in the local Marina Hotel. The goal was to further develop the culture of winemaking and raise the level of oenological knowledge about wines which the islanders are well known for. The lectures and practical workshops were focused on identifying the characteristics of wines and the adoption of proper terminology in their description and presentation, and they were primarily focused on winemakers and local restaurants from Krk, reports Novlist on November 21, 2015.
“Our association, which brings together about seventy small winemakers from across the island, organizes workshops such as this in order to continuously contribute to the education of its members. Now, together with representatives of the Krk Tourist Board, we would like to include a wider range of our local restaurateurs”, said Ivica Šamanić, president of the Bukaleta, noting that the response of the invited restaurateurs, as opposed to winemakers, has been a bit more negative than expected.
In any event, fifty winemakers and people in charge of food and beverages in hotels and restaurants on Krk had an opportunity to learn a lot from sommelier Sandi Paris, president of the Educational Committee of the Croatian Sommelier Club. He taught them the basics of serving wines, making an organoleptic assessment and describing wines. He also discussed the issues of choosing the right kind of glasses to serve certain wines, as well as current trends in the world of wines and sommeliers.
“Educational gatherings like this, which we have been organizing according to a regular annual schedule, undoubtedly bear fruit”, Šamanić said. This conclusion is based on the raising quality of wines produces by members of his association. He also announced that similar activities of his members and representatives of the local tourist boards on the island will certainly continue in the future as well. Winemakers from the island will in just a few days visit northwestern parts of Croatia where they will be introduced to the practices and the achievements of their colleagues from the area of Međimurje.
