Croatian tennis player Borna Ćorić is on to the second round of the ATP tournament in Miami, while Mirjana Lučić-Baroni is on to the third round of the WTA tournament in the same city
Ćorić grasped a tough victory over Spaniard Marcelo Granollers with 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3. The Spanish player is ranked 21 positions better than the Croat from Zagreb. Borna won the equalized first set in the tie-break, while in the second set the Spaniard made a break in the seventh game which secured him the second set, Jutarnji List reported on March 23, 2017.
In the third set Granollers took the lead with 2-0, after which Ćorić spent ten minutes in medical treatment, which paid off as he lined up five games in a row and won this tight match. This is Borna’s third victory in the same number of mutual matches.
In the WTA tournament in Miami, Mirjana Lučić-Baroni defeated Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko with 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (2).
The best Croatian player made a large turnaround against the 94th ranked player, who was up by 5-1 in the third set. Despite the large lag, the Makarska native managed to catch up and equalize at 5-5, and in the 13th game of the last set completely outplayed the Ukrainian and gained a large victory.
Lučić-Baroni, currently 29th on the WTA list, was free in the first round and will meet in the 3rd round the better of Polish Agnieszka Radwanska and Chinese Qiang Wang.
