Two sets of twins won two gold medals in Trakai.

Croatian juniors won two gold medals at the World Rowing Championship in Trakai, Lithuania, after three of the six Croatian crews participated in the championship, HRT Sport reports on August 6.

Interestingly enough, the gold winning teams are actually two sets of twins.

Osijek twins Patrick and Anton Lončarić won gold in Junior Men’s Pair Category. Romania had the lead as the Lončarić twins tried to keep up, managing to overtake them 20 m from the finish.

The biggest talents among the Croatian rowing crews demonstrated a rarely seen strong sprint in the last 100 min, beating the Romanian team with more than a 3-second advantage. After their tough break, winning seventh place at the European Championship in Germany in May, coach Krešimir Ižaković announced that the twins would show their true colours at the world championship. And so they did, giving gold as a present to themselves for their seventeenth birthday, on August 8.

“We really enjoyed that – the last 500m we closed our eyes and sprinted. Coming into the race we knew we had a strong sprint, so we went hard in the middle to keep pace with the Romanians. We really enjoyed it,” Patrik Lončarić said.

Two biggest talents in women’s rowing also had great results. Ivana and Josipa Jurković, twins from Vela Luka, joined by Bruna Milinović and Izabela Krakić, led by Saša Vukojčić, won gold in Junior Women’s Four Finals.

European champions from Krefeld, Germany have now added a world championship medal to their collection. They were in the lead for the entire 2,000 meters, leaving the persistent Romanian team more than three seconds behind. Having celebrated her seventeenth birthday a day before, on August 5, stroke Izabela Krakić celebrated for two days in a row.

“I can’t believe it! That was the best race of our lives. I am speechless, we had a big push at the start, a ten in the middle and the last 500m we went to the max,” Bruna Milinović said after the race.
