Final result Brazil Croatia 1-3
Borna Ćorić secured the return of Croatia to the Davis Cup World Group after Thomaz Belluci was forced to retire with Ćorić leading 6:2 3:6 7:6(4) 4:0. Last scheduled match between Joao Souza and Mate Delić was not played.
3-1 win against Brazil means that Croatia will play in the Davis Cup World Group for the 13th time in 14 years which is an incredible achievement for our small nation.
Even though Marin Čilić, our best player, was not able to play and help his teammates, it was the 18-year old Borna Ćorić who rose to the occasion and saved the day winning both singles rubbers.
Croatia’s captain Željko Krajan commented on the win: “It is a very big win without Marin Čilic. Brazil was favourite but again Borna [Coric] proved how fast he is improving. He’s maturing very quickly and to be able to play with this crowd, to play your best tennis in the most important moments, that’s incredibly big.”
This is what he had to say about returning to the World Group “We have a very good generation, it would have been a shame to drop out. With Marin coming back and Borna we can really make an impact in the World Group.”
