Davis Cup Finals vs Argentina: Hell in the Zagreb Arena

Total Croatia News

Croatian tennis player and member of the Davis Cup team Ivan Dodig shared his thoughts on the upcoming November 25 finals

“Of course I think about it and it is certain we are all yearning for the day the finals begin. We’ve invested a lot to get here, each one of us gave a maximum effort in all three previous duels. I would point out the atmosphere in the team was excellent and we showed it on the court. I believe we are capable of making this decisive step for Croatia and our tennis,” Jutarnji List reported on November 10, 2016.

One of the most important participants will not be ready for the finals. Borna Ćorić had to have knee surgery and although recovery is going quite well, he cannot be counted on. Hence after four and a half years Ivo Karlović is coming back, he couldn’t say no in the moment when the team lost its second strongest.

“I don’t even have to say how overjoyed we are with Karlović returning. Unfortunately, we don’t know what shape Borna will be in, but Ivo brought a smile to our faces. What can I say? Ivo’s results are admirable, I find it incredible what’ he’s done this year with 37 years on his back, physically he is truly fantastic. His nickname is Doctor Ivo for a reason as what he is playing now is certainly his best tennis.”

Argentinean selector Daniel Orsanic revealed his team members for Zagreb far before the deadline. No surprises in his selection, same four players which defeated Great Britain in Glasgow. Juan Martin del Potro, Federico Delbonis, Guido Pella and Leonardo Mayer.

“They are the best they have, I didn’t think they would choose otherwise. Del Potro is their leader, just like Marin is ours, it all begins with him. We are in for a great match, I don’t consider us favourites, details will make the difference.”

Orsanic already announced he will combine Del Potro and Mayer in couples. Considering all you’ve done so far in couples, especially with Marin, are you a favourite in this match at least?
“It is hard to say. Were not Americans and French favourites against us and we still won? It won’t be easy, couples are always 50-50. We hope to be successful, ending this season with four wins in couples and more importantly, be satisfied at the end of the finals.”

Zagreb Arena is sold out, Croatia can expect great support from the bleachers and there is no doubt this final will be remembered from that angle. Of course it won’t decide the outcome, but it’s certainly nicer to play with such support.
“Whenever I played at home, either in Zagreb or Umag, I’ve always given my maximum. Playing at home is the best stimulus, after all, my only Tour tournament was won in Zagreb. The full bleachers, 15.000 fans will be a great stimulus. Our Tour rivals have more opportunity to play at home and so for us this is invaluable. I can’t wait to come to Zagreb!”
