Total Croatia News

Croatian tennis player Marin Čilić is through to the quarterfinals of the ATP tournament from the Masters 1000 series in Monte Carlo after he defeated Czech Tomaš Berdych with 6-2, 7-6 (0) after two hours of play

In the first set Čilić was excellent on his service, lost only seven points, so Berdych was not even in a position to make a break. The Croatian player made two breaks to win the first section with 6-2, Jutarnji List reported on April 20, 2017.

The second set was more uncertain. Čilić failed to take the opponent’s service at 3-3, but at 4-4, with three break points he did not, taking the lead with 5-4 and serving for the match.

The Czech player, coached by Marin’s former coach Goran Ivanišević, did not give up and came to two break points. But Čilić again dominated and had the opportunity to serve for the match. Berdych saved himself again and evened up at 5-5.

In the end the decision came in the tie-break which Čilić won convincingly with 7-0 and made it to the quarterfinals. This was their 12th mutual duel and they are now even at 6-6.

In the quarterfinals Čilić will play the day’s sensation, Spaniard Alberto Ramos-Vinolas who defeated the premier world tennis player Andy Murray after two and a half hours of play (2-6, 6-2, 7-5).

Čilić leads in wins against Ramos-Vinolas with 3-1.
