International Handball Goalie Camp in Split

Total Croatia News

The sixth edition of the camp is set to begin on Saturday, with over three thousand participants from 32 nations

Camp organiser Mario Čaljkušić emphasised on Thursday at a press conference that this is a unique project of its kind in the world and that many famed handball names attend each year, including numerous scouts, managers and coaches, Croatian Radiotelevision reports on June 16, 2016. “We have decided to move the camp to Split, as it offers more possibilities than Tučepi and Makarska, where we had our first five editions. The city of Split is a magnet in itself and we hope that the next five editions will be organised here, and we’ll go from there,” Čaljkušić said noting that handball in Split is not faring well, a problem in general across the state and hopes this camp will help the local handball somewhat.

Taking part in the camp is also legendary National Handball Team goalie Mirko Alilović who witnessed that more and more children join every year as it gets better. “Croatia, or the old Yugoslav school, is the best school for handball goalies in the world, just look how many excellent goalies it produced. I hope some of these children will in the future become great names of world handball. It is not said without reason that the goalie is half the team, much depends on him and I’m glad kids can come and see role models like Thierry Omeyer, Kasper Hvidt. I believe the move to Split will also benefit the camp as it is a much larger city, with more content and I believe in the success of this project in the future,” Alilović said.

The official camp closing will be at an event in the evening hours of June 23rd on the Split seafront, where a small handball court will be placed for young Split handballers to play on. All visitors will be able to try how easy, or not, it is to score on famed goalies, lecturers in the best camp for handball goalies in the world. Sponsors of this year’s camp have provided numerous awards and gifts for all participants, as well as a donation to the Down 21 association from Split.
