Rijeka won in Koprivnica and now needs only one more win to secure the first National Championship Title
It is not official yet, but only a miracle can deny Rijeka’s first Championship Title in its history after the team beat Slaven 2-0 away in Koprivnica on May 17, 2016. Andrijašević and Vešović scored for Rijeka’s win, and if they win their home game to underdog Cibalia this weekend, they will be crowned as Champions for the first time in their 61 year history.
Rijeka is dominating this Croatian Football League season, as they lost only one match, and were playing the best football in Croatia. Dinamo was not even close to its performances from last decade, and it seems that the indictments made by state prosecutors against Dinamo’s officials had quite the effect on the Zagreb’s club affairs.
The league was not any less controversial due to that fact, as Lokomotiva is still competing in the same league as Dinamo, and all the referees who were involved in the referee organization while its former bosses took bribe are still directing the games on the Croatian pitches.
In fact, it was Lokomotiva who managed to be the single team to beat Rijeka this year. After a series of mistakes made by referees in the peak of the season, Rijeka’s chairman, Damir Mišković threatened to leave the Executive Board of CFF, and after that, Rijeka had what could be called a fair shot at the title.
They duly deserved the title, and this weekend one can expect quite a crazy celebrations in Rijeka. Their fan firm “Armada,” celebrated their 30th Anniversary just a week ago, and they will have a chance to do it all over again if everything goes as expected.
