Barbara Matić and Dominik Družeta won bronze medals on the second day of the European Senior Championship in judo taking place in Warsaw
On the second day of the European Judo Championship in Poland four Croatian representatives competed, winning two medals – Barbara Matić (up to 70 kg) and Dominik Družeta (up to 81 kg), Jutarnji List reported on April 21, 2017.
Matić, the second seeded in the category up to 70 kg, was free in the first round, was decisive with ippon in her first match against Montenegrin Peković. In the quarterfinals she met her old rival, Katarzyna Klys. In the end she was better with a wazari to join the best European four.
The semi-finals matched her with German Scoccimarro who began with a better rhythm, used her chances and went on to the finals. In the battle for bronze Barbara did not leave many chances for the Swedish Bernholm. An ippon in the third minute of the fight brought her the second European bronze, her first being from 2014.
The path to the bronze for Dominik Družeta began against Georgian Rekvijašvili after only 14 seconds into the fight. He then defeated on Friday the Latvian Mikuckis and then German Muennich to enter the quarterfinals in the category up to 81 kg. He then lost to Dutch De Wit, world and European junior champion.
In the final duel he had a replay of the fight for bronze against the Moldavian Zaborosciuc from the European Championship for younger seniors in 2015 in Bratislava, winning with a wazari in the last minute of the fight.
“It was a very good performance with which Dominik showed progress, especially psychologically. He managed to make up the lag against the Latvian and was active in all fights. In the end, third place is a reward for all the work and effort he invested,” said the selector of the male teams Dean Ilić.
