The premier Croatian tennis player Mirjana Lučić-Baroni has made it to the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in American Charleston by defeating the 21st world player, Dutch Kiki Bertens with 7-6 (5), 6-4

It was an exciting duel in which the Makarska native made six breaks against here opponent, not giving up when she was the underdog in the first set. Mirjana lost her service in the first game of the match, coming back to 4-4, only for Bertens to make another break in the next game and a chance to win the first set on her service, Jutarnji List reported on April 6, 2017.

Mirjana managed to get out of that too, not giving up even when the opponent led in the tie-break with 4-1 and 5-3, taking the first set with 7-5 in the end. In the second set Lučić-Baroni had the initiative, and after the Dutch came back from losing her service twice, Mirjana made a break for 5-4 to create a chance to end the match on her service, which she did and defeated a player two positions above her.

It was their second duel, with the first going to the Dutch two years ago at the US Open.

In the quarterfinals Mirjana will meet the better from the duel of American Shelby Rogers and Japanese Naomi Osaka.
