April the 12th, 2025 – The popular Terme Tuhelj has finally reopened its doors following a massive 27 million euro investment. This investment is otherwise the largest in Croatian “thermal” tourism.

As Story.hr writes, the recent grand (re)opening of Terme Tuhelj marked a historic moment – the completion of the largest investment in the resort’s history, totalling 27 million euros. That investment positioned this leading thermal complex as one of the most innovative and sustainable destinations in all of continental Croatia.

cross-border cooperation between croatia and slovenia

The event was attended by officials from both Croatia and Slovenia: Tonči Glavina, the Croatian Minister of Tourism, Matjaž Han, Slovenia’s Minister of Economy, Tourism and Sport, and Kristjan Staničić, Director of the Croatian National Tourist Board (HTZ). Their presence further confirmed the importance of Terme Tuhelj and this investment for the development of regional tourism and cross-border cooperation in the areas of healthcare, wellness and sustainability.

Following more than two decades of continuous investment and growth, Terme Tuhelj currently represents one of the most modern thermal resorts in the entire region. The Terme Tuhelj investment, of which 6.6 million euros was co-financed through the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, is the result of the Terme Olimia Group’s strategic focus on innovation, sustainability and high quality service.

The partnership between architectural studios, among which the architectural office Onda arhitektura should certainly be mentioned, resulted in one of the most modern buildings in this part of Croatia. The project was worked on by artists whose contributions added an extra dot to the i, namely: Ana Kovačić, who designed an innovative mural in the new relaxation zone within the pool, the company Numen, who designed a play net at the new pool reception, and the artist Mirjana Smolić, who was in charge of restoring the mural by the famous artist Edo Murtić, and Slaven Lunar, who embellished the entrance wall opposite the hotel reception with his creations. The main contractor was MDK Građevinar.

key elements of the terme tuhelj investment

  • The modernisation of the Water Planet indoor pools with additional wellness facilities
  • The opening of a brand new part of the hotel – Well Family**** boasting 46 premium family rooms with interactive facilities for children
  • The landscaping of a brand new square with green roofs and a fountain
  • A panoramic green promenade with islands of flowering meadows with around 50,000 plants and seedlings
  • Terme Tuhelj’s own solar power plant and biomass boiler house
  • The digitalisation of business processes and the introduction of smart energy and service management systems

a focus on sustainable development

These brand new facilities aren’t only an aesthetic and functional shift, but also a clear sign of Terme Tuhelj’s ongoing firm commitment to sustainable tourism. The resort is introducing a series of ecological solutions following the strategic ESG strategy of the Terme Olimia group, which includes the following:

  • Digital tools for a more personalised user experience and energy efficiency
  • Green roofing that contributes to better insulation, the reduction of urban warming, and contributes to the protection and restoration of the biodiversity of the ecosystem
  • The installation of operational energy capacities (photovoltaic power plants and biomass boilers) with renewable sources, which will allow Terme Tuhelj to save over 40% of its primary electricity consumption annually and thus significantly contribute to climate change mitigation. These alone have increased the share of renewable energy sources to over 91%
  • Advanced water recycling and filtration systems

“At both Terme Olimia and at Terme Tuhelj, sustainable development isn’t just a strategy, but part of our vision for the future of tourism. Every piece of innovation we introduce aims to reduce our impact on the environment and improve the quality of our guests’ stay. We’re proud that through green initiatives, we’re able to create a space that harmonises nature, technology and a fantastic experience,” stated Florjan Vasle, director of the parent company Terme Olimia and one of the two directors of Terme Tuhelj.

a touch of luxury

The specially designed Well Family**** hotel allows parents and children to enjoy a carefree and comfortable stay. Existing facilities such as playrooms, hammocks and animation programmes further enrich the family break experience. The new accommodation pavilion contains 36 family rooms, 2 suites and 8 deluxe rooms. All rooms feature an interactive tangram rock designed by Marko Hrastovec.

In addition, expanded thermal facilities and a new relaxation zone with hydro-massage pools provide adult guests with relaxation and luxury at the highest level.

the terme tuhelj investment and the future of wellness tourism in croatia

Thanks to this investment, Terme Tuhelj has not only confirmed its position as a leader in thermal tourism, but also set new standards of quality, sustainability and user experience. All of that has been done with a strong focus on the synergy of nature, technology and health.

The grand opening of the new facilities marked the beginning of a new chapter, and Terme Tuhelj is now fully ready for an even larger number of domestic and international guests – offering them a wellness experience that exceeds expectations.
