The city of Vukovar is gradually becoming a popular destination for river cruises
In recent years, Vukovar has become the city that boasts the largest number of river cruise ship arrivals in all of Croatia. According to the local Port Authority, some 40.000 tourists will visit Vukovar this year, disembarking from 223 river cruise ships, reports Lokalni on May 7, 2018.
For the majority of said tourists, Vukovar will be a stop on a cruise along the river Danube. The first of the many luxury cruise ships that will visit Vukovar this year stopped by on March 15, kicking off a season that will last until the middle of November.
Head of the Administrative Department for Culture and Tourism Marina Sekulić said the city has been recording a growing interest from cruise ship passengers with each passing year. “The majority of cruise passengers is coming to Vukovar from the US, Japan and Scandinavian countries”, she said. The city plans to continue branding Vukovar as a tourist destination and expand the cultural and tourist offer in the city.
According to Sekulić, as part of the bigger plan to entice tourism growth, the city is financing an educational programme for ten tour guides with a working knowledge of English. “Vukovar is definitely a destination which has a lot to offer to tourists, starting from two museums and the Baroque city centre, to war tourism”, Sekulić concluded.
