Cinema Under the Stars at Barone Fortress in Šibenik

Total Croatia News

Croatia boasts an impressive number of defensive walls and fortresses all over the country. Most of them, especially those on the coast, never cease to lure visitors who are left amazed by the well-preserved historical heritage and breathtaking views of the surrounding scenery.

One of the most attractive historic sites in the country is the town of Šibenik with its three fortresses: St. Nicholas, St. Michael and the Barone Fortress. The last one is a fine example of how cities should take care of their fortification architecture, and if possible, turn such sites into cultural venues that would both teach visitors about the local history and provide guests with quality programmes and events.

The Barone Fortress underwent a revitalisation project that transformed the already impressive fort into a place that “combines the past, present and the future” using the latest modern technology, as stated on the official website of this unique monument. Built in 1646, the fortress has recently been restored and equipped in order to house various events and educational programmes, as well as promote the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle in the Gastro-Cultural Centre.

If you happen to visit Šibenik this summer, keep in mind Barone will host the second edition of the outdoor cinema programme called Wednesdays around the world. Starting from today, June 25, each Wednesday evening will see a screening of one of the eight movies and documentaries selected by Nikica Šupe.

Purchasing a daily ticket for 50 kuna gets you a visit both to St. Michael’s Fortress and Barone, as well as free entrance to one of the movie nights; you can get your ticket here or at the box office of the forts.

All screenings begin at 9:30 PM, and here’s a schedule for the summer:

June 22: ‘Wild Stories’ (Argentina, dir. Damian Szifron)

June 29: ‘Don’t Leave Me’ (Belgium, dir. Sabine Lubbe Bakker and Niels van Koevorden)
