The passengers were not too pleased when the pilot informed them they had been left with just one engine running.
On Saturday afternoon, a Croatia Airlines flight from London to Zagreb experienced unexpected vibrations, which caused pilots to turn off an engine. According to information from the passengers who were on board, the plane took off from the Heathrow airport at around 4.40 pm. Approximately half an hour before landing in Zagreb, a noise was heard in the plane and vibrations were felt by the passengers, reports Index.hr on August 12, 2018.
“It sounded like a problem with the landing gear, but then one of the pilots announced that one engine had broken down so they had to turn it off,” said one of the passengers on the OU491 flight. The passengers were surprised, but there was no panic on the plane.
Croatia Airlines announced that “on a regular flight from London, there was an indication of vibrations on the Airbus 320 aircraft engine, which caused the pilots to implement the strict safety procedure from the aircraft manufacturer and preventively shut down one engine.”
“The aircraft landed safely at 8.30 pm in Zagreb with one engine turned off. Please note that commercial airliners, specifically the Airbus aircraft, are designed and manufactured so that situations such as this do not affect the safety of flight and passengers. The aircraft can safely land with one working engine,” said Davor Janušić, the spokesperson of Croatia Airlines.
Croatia Airlines emphasized that it was not an emergency landing, but it did admit that such things rarely happen.
The flight was delayed by 30 minutes on landing, but Croatia Airlines states that the engine shutdown was not the reason for this.
This is just one of a series of headaches for the company, largest of which was an announced strike of pilots and other employees, which was last week prevented at the last moment when a court banned the strike.
