It has been a few weeks since new Hvar Town Mayor Riki Novak’s attempts to bring a little order to Hvar Town made global headlines. How are tourists reacting to those signs? TCN visited Hvar Town on August 20, 2017.
Perception is everything in tourism, and the slow change of Hvar Town’s images of a destination of culture to one of party has been painful to watch.
The election of a new mayor, a man of the town with its best interests his priority, Mayor Riki Novak promised to rein in the anti-sociable behaviour if he was elected on June 4.
His first major public act was to erect signs on the entrances to the town, promising heavy fines for people who walked through the historic centre indecently dressed, or eating and drinking in the street.
It was a story that went global, but something that was a little less reported was that top European destinations such as Venice and Florence soon followed suit.
How are tourists reacting to the signs? TCN was in Hvar Town today, and captured a group of topless male tourists, beer cans in hand, about to enter the historic centre. This is what happened next.
A few basic rules, politely presented, can make all the difference.
