August the 31st, 2025 – Kastav is the smallest town in Croatia when it comes to its surface area alone, and it is absolutely worth a weekend trip if you find yourself in Kvarner.
As Putni kofer/Antonio Ivcevic writes, Croatia is a country where each single city, town and in many cases even villages have their own rhythm and story. Some are proud of their size and wealth, others of their location or history, but among them there is one that stands out for a completely different reason. It isn’t the largest or the most famous, but the smallest, at least when looking at its surface area.

Kastav occupies only 11.4 square kilometres in total, but in this small space, centuries of history, a sense of community and a life that exudes a special warmth are all intertwined. Kastav rises 365 metres above the sea, on a hill high above the Kvarner Bay, located in the immediate vicinity of Rijeka and Opatija. At first glance, it’s clear that this is a small town that looks down on the sea, islands and the ever-changing sky.
Standing next to its old walls and letting your gaze drift across the endless deep blue, all the way to the distant islands that seem to float on the horizon is enough to make you fall in love with Kastav. Kastav is actually an experience that captivates you and makes you stay a little longer, at least until the next play of light over the bay below. It is also worth noting that Kastav isn’t just a backdrop for a good photo, nor just a beautiful panorama. It is a lively place where everyday life still flows in the rhythm of the old town: children run carefree through the narrow streets, residents dry laundry on their balconies in the sun, just as they did countless centuries ago.

Between the stone houses there’s a warm sense of community that reminds one of some bygone times with a deep nostalgia. It’s precisely this simplicity and the authenticity of life in Kastav that gives it its special charm. The impression that will accompany you as you walk through the city is that time really does move at a slower, more beautiful pace here. A stroll through the narrow streets of Kastav is like walking through an open-air gallery. The old stone houses, lined up side by side, hide small art studios and galleries where local artists create and exhibit their works, making this combination of tradition and modern life felt at first sight. Almost every house in Kastav’s charming old town tells its own unique story, from family memories to artistic expressions, and it’s precisely this connection of people and space that makes Kastav so special. They say that once you get to know it, Kastav is etched in your memory and stays in your heart forever, making it the perfect weekend trip when in Kvarner.

In addition to the old town core and historic walls, Kastav is surrounded by centuries-old forests that provide an ideal environment for walks, cycling and other outdoor activities. Loza and Lužina, two forest units connected to the city, are both natural and cultural symbols of the city. Here, nature and history merge into a unique ambience that attracts lovers of active holidays, as well as all those who simply want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Despite being the smallest Croatian town by area, Kastav is by no means small in what it offers, and you might even find that a weekend trip here isn’t enough time to take it all in. Its ancient streets, local people, stories and the nature around it make it a place bursting with special energy and identity. This rich combination of history, art, nature and gastronomy are the reasons why Kastav is worth visiting and why this pearl of the Rijeka hinterland conquers the heart of everyone who gives it a chance.
