Watch the mesmerising video tribute to the largest wetland area in Croatia by Goran Šafarek
Lonjsko Polje Nature Park (Lonja Field) is the largest protected wetland in the entire Danube basin, spanning over 505 square kilometres between the cities of Sisak and Nova Gradiška.
Even though the institution wasn’t founded until 1998, the area has been protected by the Ramsar Covention on Wetlands of International Importance since 1993, due to it being one of the most endangered wetland areas in the world. Nowadays, Lonjsko Polje is home to multiple animal species indigenous to Croatia and a habitat of a large number of endangered members of flora and fauna.
Croatian biologist and videographer Goran Šafarek recently came out with a beautiful video on Lonjsko Polje, a tribute to the biodiversity of the area featuring stunning footage of unspoilt nature and its carefree inhabitants. The video was made as part of Šafarek’s project ‘Rivers of Croatia’ which you can look into on his YouTube channel.
