May on Hvar: A Sporting Month on an Island in Bloom

Paul Bradbury

April 18 2024 – It is an island of all seasons, each month offering something different. May on Hvar is a sporting month in fabulous nature. A magical time to visit.

I am just back from 12 days in Dalmatia, including 5 at Hotel Adriana in Hvar Town, one of the great chill spots of the Adriatic. I had forgotten just how addictive the Dalmatian pre-season is, with everything opening, locals having time, the crowds non-existent, and the weather and vibe idyllic. Peak season has its fans, but if you want to experience the true magic of Dalmatia, there are few better things to enjoy than May on Hvar.

Especially if you are a sports fan. Hvar is an island which has everything: UNESCO heritage, beaches, culture, tradition, gastronomy, nature, lifestyle… but it is also an outstanding adventure tourism and active sporting destination.

Hvar Town announced something of a couple recently with its hosting of the adrenaline Spartan World Championship for the next 3 years, with some 10,000 guests expected in mid-October, as previously reported on TCN.

May on Hvar will be providing plenty of adrenaline of its own, as the island’s beauty and challenging terrain will be testing sportsmen and women from all over in a variety of events.

For basketball enthusiasts, Hvar will host the Pro 3×3 Tour from May 16th to May 19th, 2024. The International Open Championship of Croatia in 3×3 basketball will gather talented players to compete in dynamic and exciting matches. This is an opportunity for visitors to enjoy a great atmosphere and world-class basketball skills in one of the most beautiful sports venues in the region. Learn more.

Croatia does an excellent job combining heritage with tourism. Hvar is home to the oldest public theatre in Europe, located on the main square, and the event will include “Dražen” (a play by Trešnja Theater based on real events and persons from the late childhood and adolescence of our greatest basketball player – Dražen Petrović) on May 16th and “Arsen’s Feral” performed on May 17th (Ensemble of Croatian National Theatre in Šibenik).

The Adriatic is an inviting place for a summer holiday swim, but are you ready to test your limits? UltraSwimm 33.3, an open water swimming race, will be held from May 17th to May 20th in Hvar, starting in Stari Grad, from where participants embark on the challenge of swimming a total distance of 33.3 kilometers. This unique swimming sports competition spans over four days, with the route leading from Stari Grad to Hvar. For swimming enthusiasts, this is an opportunity to test their limits and enjoy the spectacular vistas along the coast of Hvar. Learn more.

And runners have the opportunity to take part in what is surely the most picturesque half marathon in the world, the Hvar Half Marathon on May 25th, the island of Hvar invites runners to the Hvar Half Marathon. Where else in the world can you run a half marathon with views of the Adriatic on both sides? Starting from Stari Grad, competitors will face the challenge of ascending up to 400 meters above sea level before descending to the finish in the city of Hvar. The asphalted track provides ideal conditions for running, while the beautiful island landscapes will motivate runners to achieve their best results. Learn more.

Of course, one doesn’t need to enter a competition to become active on Hvar in May. It is a glorious time for cycling, hiking, swimming, kayaking, or just chilling. Because Hvar is an island for all people and tastes. But Hvar in May is something else. Have you tried it?
