Advent in Rijeka is expanding to a new location this season: the Trsat castle

The Advent programme in Rijeka is in full swing, and we’ll make sure to bring you a closer look to what’s on offer on the Korzo Promenade and the Old Town. In the meantime, take a look at the video below to see how the people of Rijeka and their visitors celebrated the holiday season last year:

Apart from the Christmas market in the city centre, one other location will don its festive gear for the first time: Trsat, a neighbourhood located on the hill above Rječina river, will soon light up the sky above Rijeka, reports Novi list on December 5, 2017.

Trsat is known as a favourite destination both among locals and tourists, as it boasts both a gorgeous historic castle built in the 13th century and the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat. On sunny weekend mornings, you’ll find many a local strolling around the neighbourhood, sitting down for a coffee or visiting the castle turret to feast their eyes on one of the most spectacular views in the city.

This weekend, Trsat will get even more attractive: the biggest Christmas bauble is about to be set alight on Saturday night, festively marking the entrance to the castle. The bauble is a golden structure measuring over 5 metres in height, wrapped up in a total of 10.000 Christmas lights. All visitors to the Advent on Trsat will have the opportunity to pass through the sparkling sphere on their way to the castle, where they will enjoy a mouthwatering palette of gastro delights and thirteen other programmes.

Judging by the photos posted earlier today on the Facebook group New Encyclopedia of Rijeka – Fluminensia, calling the castle’s new gear dazzling would still make for an understatement:

Talk about a dress rehearsal!

As the city is marking the 240th anniversary of birth of the Austrian Field Marshal, Count Laval Nugent who used to own the castle, one more sculpture is about to get installed within the castle walls. A holiday-themed carriage will light up the premises, with an unexpected creature at the helm: the dragon of Trsat, a mythical basilisk creature known as one of the symbols of Rijeka.

The holiday celebrations on Trsat kick off on December 9, starting from 17:00.
