New Bike Paths Opened in Split

Total Croatia News

Life just got better for cyclists in Split.

On Saturday, new bicycle paths were officially opened in Split by the morning ride of the mayor of Split Ivo Baldasar and deputy mayor Goran Kovačević. They were accompanied by many citizens, among them Denis Špadina, the president of Cycling Union of the Split-Dalmatia County, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on September 12, 2015.

The bike paths are 11 kilometres long in total and connect the eastern entrance to the city and the West Waterfront. The trail follows the route: Domovinskog rata Street – Put Supavla – Hrvatske Mornarice Street – Sedam Kaštela Street – Matoševa Street – Marjan – Ivan Meštrović Promenade, where it connects to the already constructed bicycle path on the West Waterfront.

The paths are marked with horizontal and vertical traffic signs. The whole project, which was completed by the city communal companies “Cestar” and “Point Split”, is worth 230,000 kuna.

The mayor of Split Ivo Baldasar said that the bike path was constructed in order to popularize the use of bicycles as a means of transportation for the citizens of Split of all ages. “We are planning to expand the paths for a few kilometres more, perhaps all the way to Stobreč, so that the total trail through the city would be longer than 20 kilometres. I think we will complete that project in the next two months and then our fellow citizens will be able to improve their health by riding their bicycles through the city. Those who cannot or will not ride a bike can take a walk along the bicycle path. However, I would like to ask that all citizens who are walking or driving through the city pay attention to the bicycle paths and to not walk on them, since they are intended for cyclists”, said Baldasar.

Špadina added that the city administration has promised him that was only the beginning of the construction of bicycle paths in Split. The city of Split and the municipality of Klis are together planning the construction of bicycle paths called “Games of Thrones”. That trail would lead from Klis through Stobreč to Duilovo, and would be connected to the existing route.
