Summer is fast approaching, and while we still have to wait a bit longer for the beach season, the weather has been fantastic for the last couple of days. Why not head to Opatija for the weekend? If by any chance you find yourself in this wonderful town on Saturday, May 20th, you’re in luck: there’s a whole evening of art, music and dance waiting for you at the Art Pavilion Juraj Šporer.
Dedicated to women, the 13th edition of the Op Art Festival will see a succession of attractive events starting with a promotion of Ružica Šimunović’s book titled “Body in Dialogue: Women’s Performance Art in Croatia”. The book presents an overview of performance art created by women from the 1970s to the present day, and features 20 Croatian performance artists, including Tajči Čekada who will present her own work at the festival.
Čekada’s photo exhibition that opens at 8 PM is titled “The life of plants in Croatian public institutions”, and speaks about the state of society through a sort of reflection on the coexistence of plants and the bureaucracy wasteland we’re all familiar with.
The exhibition opening is followed by a dance performance “Dead Time” by the Art Organisation Kabinet, led by Ivana Kalc and performed by her dance ensemble. After the show, a banquet and wine tasting are to take place on the terrace in front of the pavilion, accompanied by the electronic-eclectic music duo MED.
This year’s edition of the Op Art festival is questioning the female body as a medium, as well as bodies as social construct in general, aiming to insist on the political visibility of women. For more information, check out the Facebook event.
