May 2, 2018 – The Guardian’s list of 12 attractive destinations on the Mediterranean opens with two Croatian hotspots

You know summer is fast approaching when best-beach lists start popping up all over the media, often featuring a Croatian top destination or two. The Guardian recently came out with a list of ’12 of the best beach towns in southern Europe’, featuring dreamy tourist meccas situated in Croatia, Greece, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal. Two items per each country – there’s enough love for all to share.

It’s nice to see that the likes of Dubrovnik and Split have been left out of the spotlight this time around. Truth be said, they don’t need any more help, as they’ve been crushing it on the tourism front in the last couple of years as it is. The Guardian opted for two other iconic destinations in Croatia, both growingly popular and more than deserving of attention.

On the top of the list – with its splendid panorama displayed above the article – there’s Šibenik, described as “the gateway to Krka national park and the Kornati islands, but this 1,000-year-old city has enough in itself to keep visitors happily busy for days. A slow amble along its waterfront goes past bars, restaurants and the 15th-century Cathedral of St James, a Unesco world heritage site with a blend of gothic and renaissance architecture. In the labyrinthine old town are several of Šibenik’s fortresses, including Sveti Mihovil, a magical spot for outdoor concerts in summer.” They also mention the Barone fortress and recommend the Banj beach for some quality downtime. Next up, Zadar, a town with plenty of cultural and historical heritage to explore, but also a great starting point for day trips to neighbouring islands and national parks. “With a fascinating Roman, Byzantine and Venetian history, laid-back beaches, a shimmering promenade and audacious public art, Zadar is instantly beguiling. Among its attractions is Nikola Bašić’s underwater art installation, Sea Organ, with its mournful sounds and disco dancefloor-like Greeting to the Sun companion piece. Then there are the remains of the Roman forum and the imposing ninth-century St Donat church and wonderful Venetian marble lanes and stone houses”, writes The Guardian. You can take a quick tour of Zadar with the help of this piece, and learn more about its famous Sea Organ and the light installation here
