Spending some time in Istria this weekend? In that case, you just might to make it to a superb event we found about last minute, but still consider worth reporting. Starting from Fažana in Istria, a small regatta featuring only traditional wooden boats will depart for the island of Veliki Brijun (Big Brijun), the largest beauty of the famous Brijuni archipelago.
This is the sixth edition of the regatta that aims to preserve the lovely traditional vessels; around 15 boats are expected to participate, all of them arriving from various coastal towns in Istria and Kvarner. Different types of wooden boats such as batana, guc, pasara and gajeta are coming from Pula, Medulin, Rovinj, Mošćenička Draga, Lovran, Selce, Krk and other places.

The regatta is starting today at 13:00 – hence the last minute remark – but there’ll also be a second leg coming back from Veliki Brijun at 15:00. Even if you miss the regatta, you can still enjoy the rest of the programme: throughout the day, you can join the locals in Fažana who will gladly show you the boats and tell you some interesting stories. At the port on Veliki Brijun, an exhibition is awaiting the visitors to teach them about the boatbuilding process, various types of boats, their purpose and significance. The display is accompanied by information in multiple languages.
The whole manifestation is devised as an attempt to promote and preserve maritime heritage and tradition of Istria and Kvarner. The regatta is co-organised by the Sailing Club Brioni from Fažana, Municipality of Fažana, the Tourist Board Fažana and the National Park Brijuni.
