August 15, 2023 – The City Administration of Varaždin has decided to reallocate Špancirfest promotion money to help Slovenia after it suffered heavy flooding.
Not long ago, Slovenia and Croatia were hit by floods after weeks of unstable weather and heavy rainfall. The wave hit Slovenia first, wreaking havoc all around the country in the ‘worst natural disaster to ever hit’ it. The damage will take a long time and significant financial resources to fix, and help from the entire European Union is expected and has been arriving to Slovenia. Slovenia has already thanked Croatia for all its support so far, and more is coming daily.
As Poslovni writes, the city of Varaždin has now diverted money for the promotion of Špancirfest in Ljubljana and bought professional air dehumidifiers to help the areas affected by catastrophic floods in neighboring Slovenia. The donation was delivered on Monday in Celje.
Although the Varaždin Tourist Board had already arranged a date for the presentation of Špancirfest in the center of Ljubljana, that event was canceled as a sign of solidarity and respect for all those who died in the floods in Slovenia, the Varaždin City Administration announced.
Instead, the mayor of Varaždin, Neven Bosilj, decided to purchase three professional air dehumidifiers with additional funds from the reserve. Two were donated to the Fire Brigade of Celje as a friendly alliance with the Varaždin City Fire Brigade. The third was donated to the Voluntary Fire Brigade in the town of Nazarje, which is one of the hardest-hit places in that part of Slovenia.
The donation was presented on Monday by the deputy mayor of Varaždin, Miroslav Marković, the president of the city’s fire department, Tomislav Bogović, and the president of DVD Varaždin, Radovan Martinec. The mayor of Celje, Matija Kovač, expressed his gratitude for the donation, which, he said, would be very useful in repairing damage to houses and other objects.
The Slovenian government decided to declare the 14th of August the Day of Solidarity. The citizens got a day off to help repair the damage from the floods and help their acquaintances, neighbors, friends, and everyone else affected by the heavy floods.
