Wildfire Breaks Out Near Omiš, Houses in Danger

Firefighters are trying to prevent the blaze from reaching the first line of houses in the populated area

Earlier today, around 12:30, a fire broke out between the villages of Pisak and Marušići near Omiš, reports Slobodna Dalmacija on October 28, 2017. Owing to the strong wind, the flames are spreading quickly: the fire broke out near the highway, spreading to the top of the mountain in a single hour.

The Fire Department Omiš reported that a large number of firemen are currently trying to contain the blaze from multiple sides, as the flames are rapidly approaching nearby houses that are endangered due to the bura wind whose speed and direction are changing unpredictably.

Višeslav Pešić of the Fire Department Omiš said the wind is the main cause of concern at the moment, as no firefighting aircraft can approach the site in these weather conditions. “At the moment, the fire is most active on the northern side where it spread to the top of the mountain, where the terrain is unaccessible. We hope we will contain the fire soon and ensure the local population has a peaceful night”, said Pešić.

A Canadair did arrive to the site, but due to tempestuous wind, it had to turn around and head back to the base.

The only hope for the firefighter is the forecast, as the wind is expected to die down in the afternoon hours.
