Firefighters are still fighting fires that broke out in several parts of the coast in the past few days.

On August 24, 2017, Index.hr reports that the fire on Biokovo is still active, and the fire is spreading towards Makarska.

8.22 “Fires on Biokovo mountain, Tulove grede on Velebit, and near Jablanac are still active. Firefighters are fighting the blaze at all locations. Two helicopters will be transporting firefighters and the equipment and water they need to Biokovo,” Fire Commander of the Republic of Croatia, Slavko Tucaković, says, adding that this has been one of the most difficult seasons when it comes to the number and size of fires.

8.10 Pilots and other fire squadron members are set to receive a HRK 5,000 bonus for their hard work, N1 reports, for battling the biggest fires since Croatia’s independence.

7.30 There is no danger of fire burning on Biokovo mountain spreading towards the sea because the cliffs are too tall, but it keeps spreading on the top of the mountain, Fire Commander Dražen Glavina says for N1.

7.42 The fires in Zadar and Šibenik-Knin Counties are slowly coming under control. There are no open flames at the moment, but firefighters are still in the field because of the danger of smoke rekindling the fire. More than 500 hectares have been burnt in Kistanje, near Knin.

7.30 The Biokovo Fire, caused by a lightning strike three days ago, on the southern slopes east of Šibenik peak, is still active. A part of a black pine forest and low vegetation on an inaccessible terrain is on fire, on 1,400 m above the sea level, with no access road.

Makarska firefighters will be transported to Biokovo with a helicopter this morning, and Croatian Air forces are also expected to help in order to contain the fire, Fire Commander Dražen Glavina said on Thursday morning, adding that nothing was in danger and that the fire should not cause any major damage.

14 people have been arrested in cases related to starting the fires, read more about it here.
