The Memorial will be built in Branimirova Street.

Croatian Architects’ Association (Hrvatsko udruženje arhitekata, UHA) and the City of Zagreb have announced the results for the design contest for the concept of the new Holocaust memorial to be built in Zagreb’s Branimirova Street – Memorial to the Six Million Jews Murdered in the Holocaust (Spomenik za šest milijuna Židova stradalih u Holokaustu), Pogledaj.to reports on July 24.

The contest was open April 20 – June 20, 2017, and 38 projects were submitted to the Croatian Architects’ Association.

“Holocaust victims deserve eternal glory, and in order to cherish their memory forever, it is necessary to erect a monument that will remind us constantly of how low a man can stoop under the influence of criminal totalitarian ideologies.

We have witnessed some negative examples in recent history as well of societies idealising totalitarian regimes and violating human rights. It is each individual’s responsibility to transfer convincing and authentic messages and information on the Holocaust onto the generations to come so it would never happen again,” the contest states.

The jury consisting of Branko Lustig, Auschwitz survivor and Oscar Winner, architects Marijan Hržić, Peruško Bogdanić, Sanja Cvjetko Jerković, Vesna Kusin, Mladen Obad Šćitaroci, Andrija Rusan, Senka Dombi, and Nataša Popović and Nataša Jovičić selected the following projects as the best among the 38 submitted:
