April the 30th, 2024 – The construction of a 22-kilometre Zagreb bike highway began yesterday, and many will be happy that the issue of cycling in and around Zagreb has been finally dealt with.

Zagreb is full of cyclists, be they people cycling to work or for pleasure, as well as people working for delivery platforms like Wolt, Glovo, Bolt Food and so on. The problem Zagreb has had for a long time is with the proper infrastructure. Thin pavements full of scooters, pedestrians, dog walkers, parked cars and bikes doesn’t bode well as far as safety is concerned, and the Croatian capital has long needed a proper solution for its growing number of cyclists. It seems that solution may well be found in the future Zagreb bike highway.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the construction of the brand new Zagreb bike highway was announced officially by the City of Zagreb on Facebook. They revealed that work on the construction of the Zagreb bike highway will begin tomorrow.

“On the 29th of April, work began on the capital project for the development of a bicycle corridor along the railway line from the Student Centre all the way to Dugo Selo, spanning a total length of 22.3 kilometres!

In the first phase, which will be completed by this summer, a 1,201-metre-long section will be built under the railway viaduct and overpass from Zavrtnica to Svetica. This part will also be the first covered bicycle path in Zagreb. The new path will connect with the existing bike track at the intersection of Branimirova Street and Zavrtnica, and then continue all the way to Svetice.

The value of the works on the first section of the new Zagreb bike highway stands at 263,000 euros, with the planned completion of the works currently being three months. Mayor Tomislav Tomašević opened the works on the 29th of April at 11:00,” the City of Zagreb announced.
