February the 15th, 2026 – Employees of the Zagreb City Administration now have the use of 45 city bikes available in 16 locations where the city’s business premises are situated.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, back at the end of 2025, the City of Zagreb purchased official bikes for the needs of city administration employees. According to data published on the iTransparentnost (iTransparency) platform, the company Matis Outdoor d.o.o. was paid 24,187.50 euros for the subject of the procurement marked as bicycles for the needs of the city administration. According to the City of Zagreb’s own explanation, this is equipment intended for the internal system of official mobility of its employees during normal working hours.
In response to a query from Jutarnji list, the city administration responded that a total of 45 city bicycles had been purchased, which were distributed to 16 locations where the City of Zagreb has its business premises. The bicycles, they state, are intended for city administration employees to go to meetings and perform other official duties outside of their office location(s), which means that they should replace some of the shorter official car rides or on foot between city addresses.
“The City of Zagreb as an employer doesn’t and cannot have information about how many employees use the public bicycle service Bajs. We’re systematically working on the modernisation of public transport and the development of transport infrastructure, including through the purchase of new low-floor trams and electric buses. That includes the Bajs public bicycle system itself, as well as the purchase of bikes for the regular work of city employees,” they stated from the City of Zagreb.
The specifications provided by the City of Zagreb have shown that these are classic city bicycles used for everyday riding on asphalt. They have an aluminium frame and 28-inch wheels, standard for city models, and are equipped with a three-speed internal gear in the Shimano Nexus hub. Such a system requires less maintenance than classic external gear and is practical for short city distances, but is not intended for fast rides or steep climbs. The brakes are of the closed type (roller brake), which are often used on city bikes because they’re reliable in the rain and for everyday use, although they don’t boast the power of sports disc brakes.
The bikes come with all of the normal basic equipment: LED lights, mudguards, kickstand, bell and U-lock padlock, and the weight of each bike is 15.9 kilograms. In other words, the technical data confirms that these are simple, durable city bikes for shorter official distances, and not sports or specialised equipment.
The use of these bikes is strictly related to official needs and working hours of the Zagreb administration, with employees using them at their own risk. The City of Zagreb has stated that it is not to be held responsible for any damage or injuries incurred while riding them. Users are expected to check the condition of the bike before riding them and to record and report any defects observed.
