December the 9th, 2025 – Zagreb Cathedral is set to re-open again after six long years and plenty of post-earthquake renovation.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the beautiful Zagreb Cathedral will soon be open to the faithful in the capital city again. Zagreb Archbishop Dražen Kutleša told HRT that almost six years after the earthquake of March 2020, the cathedral will re-open its doors.
When asked by reporters precisely when the cathedral would re-open, he replied: “We’re waiting for that, it will be announced, and I believe it will be in due course”. Kutleša also believes that midnight mass can be expected in the cathedral.
Looking back several years when a 5.5 Richter magnitude earthquake shook Zagreb on March the 22nd, 2020 severely damaged the Zagreb Cathedral, one of the most important cultural and historical buildings in all of Croatia.
The earthquake collapsed the top of the southern tower, while the northern tower was seriously damaged and later removed for safety reasons. The vaults, walls, and numerous stone and decorative elements were also damaged, which is why the cathedral was closed and a long and demanding renovation began.
