July the 23rd, 2023 – As the Zagreb city services continue with the post-storm clean up, removing stricken trees and other debris, they have a special request for those of us who live here…

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, over the last couple of days and also into the night, all of the Zagreb city services have continued to work hard on eliminating the consequences of the devastating storm that hit Zagreb on July the 19th, 2023. Not to mention the smaller one which hit on the 21st, which also took out a few more trees.

Public lighting

When it comes to what damage the storm did to the public lighting system of the City of Zagreb, we can now safely say that around 1,700 metres of overhead network was damaged. 17 poles and 57 lamps were also damaged. Some of the city’s neighbourhoods were without public lighting for a while yesterday evening due to a malfunction in the device for sending a tone-frequency signal to the low-voltage electrical network, which is under the jurisdiction of Elektra Zagreb. The teams were out in the field working on the issue until yesterday and the system is now normalising.

The public damage reporting system

As of Friday afternoon, when the reporting system was initially activated, until yesterday morning at 08:00, 410 damage reports sent in by members of the general public were received. Dozens of teams from the Zagreb city services have been formed and are busy going out into the field to speed up the damage reporting process for those affected by the storm’s consequences.

School facilities

128 reports of damage to kindergarten and school buildings have been registered, of which 62 were in kindergartens, 50 were in elementary schools and 16 were in secondary schools. Most of the damage is of a minor nature, while for the four more badly damaged schools, contractors have already been contracted to come and repair the damage.

Public transport

Tram traffic has now been normalised and is regular on all of the city’s lines. In the late evening hours on Friday, there were short-term stoppages in traffic due to the intervention of firefighters or the cleaning up of fallen branches and leaves, especially in the city centre. Teams from the Zagreb city services currently on duty have been carrying out inspections of the tram infrastructure. Traffic control has also been going out to the field after receiving reports, supervising and fixing problems.

Bus lines 109 (Črnomerec – Dugave) and 146 (Reljkovićeva – Jankomir) are continuing to operate on a partially modified route due to the current ban on traffic through Prilaz baruna Filipovića. Other bus lines are running regularly.

Parks and other recreational areas

For their own safety, people are still being asked to try and avoid visiting parks and recreational and sports facilities in Jarun, Bundek, Šalata, Sopot and the Hippodrome, due to the possibility of further breaking off of certain branches of damaged trees.
