March the 25th, 2026 – Zagreb is no longer in the running for the EUCA (European Union Customs Authority) headquarters race, with only Lille (France) and Rome (Italy) now remaining.
As Index vijesti/news writes, a recently held meeting in the Belgian and EU capital of Brussels is choosing the city to host the headquarters of the European Union Customs Authority (EUCA). Lille and Rome are the only two cities left in the running, four sources confirmed to Politico.
The EU agency, which will employ around 250 very well-paid EU officials, will coordinate controls on imports of everything from questionable plastic toys to non-compliant cosmetics to illegal drugs. The choice of its headquarters has therefore attracted intense lobbying, with applications coming from cities across Europe, from Portugal to Romania.
Nine European countries are competing to host the EUCA: Belgium (Liège), Croatia (Zagreb), France (Lille), Italy (Rome), the Netherlands (The Hague), Poland (Warsaw), Portugal (Porto), Romania (Bucharest) and Spain (Malaga).
