January the 29th, 2025 – Zagreb train station (Glavni kolodvor) is set to be renovated as part of a wide scope of works expected to last 5-6 years.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, HŽ Infrastruktura/Infrastructure has launched a massive project for the complete renovation of Zagreb train station. It includes both the structural and energy renovation of the building and its surroundings. The impressive station building is 133 years old and, as a protected cultural asset, is the largest railway station in all of Croatia.
The renovation of the Zagreb train station building should last five to six years. Currently, the preparation of all of the accompanying technical documentation is underway. The complete renovation should begin in the second half of next year.
In the meantime, the reconstruction of the underpass between the railway platforms themselves has now begun. The works on that will last until March this year according to Željka Miša, a spokesperson for HŽ Infrastruktura.
“The staircases on both sides, the ceiling and illuminated advertising boards are all being renovated, and new waste bins will be installed. The plan is to install video surveillance not only in the underpass, but throughout the entire station area. We plan to come to an arrangement with artists to have street art drawn there, so that the underpass becomes a bit livelier and looks a little nicer.
In addition to the structural renovation, we’ll also get stuck into the energy renovation side of Zagreb train station. The current plan is to install solar panels and control facilities, which would produce energy from the photovoltaic system. That would make this entire building self-sustaining.
