January the 25th, 2024 – The first Zagreb tram network expansion in 20 years has now officially been announced by the powers that be here in the capital.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the City of Zagreb has announced a tender for the selection of contractors for the first stage of construction of Sarajevska cesta with its accompanying communal infrastructure. The tender was published in the Electronic Public Procurement Bulletin (EOJN), and the deadline for submitting bids has been marked as February the 27th, 2024.

“This year, the construction of another one of our announced strategic projects is set to begin,” said the Mayor of the City of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomašević, adding that Sarajevska cesta will be the new, southern entrance to the City of Zagreb. In addition, the first expansion of the Zagreb tram network after twenty years will begin.

Aside from the fact that inhabitants and visitors to Zagreb will get a new entrance to the City, Zagreb’s Dugave neighbourhood will finally get a tram connection.

The construction of Sarajevska cesta is planned with two roadways and pedestrian and bike paths on both sides. In addition to the road itself, the construction of a new tram line from Avenija Dubrovnik which will be about 2.25 kilometres long will go ahead. The announcement of the tender for the selection of the contractor for the new Zagreb tram line is planned for spring.

“With the realisation Sarajevska cesta, we’ll improve the traffic connection of the area and relieve the existing traffic network, as well as strengthen more sustainable forms of travel by expanding the tram network and building cycling and pedestrian infrastructure,” said Tomašević.

The estimated value of the construction of the road with all of its communal infrastructure and the construction of the tramway currently stands at 25 million euros (without VAT), for which the city expects the majority of co-financing from EU funds in cooperation with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure. They have also announced that the start of work on Sarajevska cesta, if the tender for a contractor is successful, should begin this autumn.
