October the 13th, 2023 – The idea of a Zagreb underground tunnel in the very heart of the city is currently being discussed, but is it remotely realistic?

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, on Wednesday, Zagreb’s deputy mayor Luka Korlaet announced an ambitious plan to solve traffic jam woes in the centre of Zagreb. He revealed on Radio Sljeme that the local powers that be are currently considering building a Zagreb underground tunnel under Gornji grad. This would represent a key connection from the north to the south, as well as to the western part of the capital. This long-term project aims to significantly ease the ongoing issues with the heavy traffic situation in the heart of the city once and for all.

An innovative solution

Although the finer details about the potential Zagreb underground tunnel itself weren’t included in his statement, Korlaet emphasised that there are studies being done on this initiative. This idea hints at a potentially innovative solution to the city’s semi-constant traffic jams, which have been a challenge for many years now.

This proposal for a tunnel under Gornji grad represents a serious step towards the modernisation of the city’s transport infrastructure. In addition to making everyday driving easier for road users, such a tunnel could also have a positive impact on the environment, reducing greenhouse gas emissions caused by long waits and road congestion.

A Zagreb underground tunnels could alter the Croatian capital (and its problms) forever

It remains to be seen how this initiative will continue to develop in the future. Considering the need for sustainable transport solutions in urban areas, the construction of a tunnel under Upper Town (Gornji grad) could represent a key step towards the modernisation and improvement of life in general in the City of Zagreb. One thing is certain, and that is that all of us who live here will be very eagerly following the development of this idea, which could forever change the way we all move around the very centre of the city.
