September the 24th, 2026 – President Zoran Milanović has harshly criticised “out of control” Croatian prices, saying that time flies and things are getting “worse and worse”.
President Zoran Milanović is participating in the Lider conference Day of Big Plans, which is being held at the Westin hotel in Zagreb. Index reports that the conference discusses the macroeconomic and economic challenges and circumstances coming in 2027. “Time flies, and things are getting worse and worse. Not only in Croatia, but everywhere around us, things are slowly slipping out of control. The UN and the international system of collective security are being mocked by their biggest financiers,” Milanović said at the beginning, reports N1.

“The international order has ceased to exist. Every sanction – a bilateral sanction – anyone’s, without UN verification is illegal. On the surface, the numbers have all advanced, GDP per capita, often a very deceptive piece of data about prosperity behind which great inequality is often hidden. Purchasing power parity is such that the differences aren’t too great in relation to some countries that we once looked at with envy,” the president stated.
“Average salaries aren’t small… However, what can be bought with that money? Croatian prices have completely spun out of control, we can only hope that things will start to eventually calm down,” he said. The worst thing, the president says, is that no one specific can be blamed for that situation, neither the governor, nor the finance minister, nor the prime minister, but one has to look at the surrounding countries, much larger than Croatia.

“The European Union and Europe as a continent have been in regression for the last hundred years, with flashes of progress that occurred after the great wars into which Europe dragged the whole world. Europe is in a cycle of shrinking into itself. Nothing that comes from Berlin or some other European metropolis should be taken either too seriously or not seriously,” Milanović said.
“Europe has some very serious problems with energy that it hasn’t managed to solve for decades already, but the moment that is said out loud, you are immediately labelled extreme left, extreme right, pro this, pro that, but that is not the way we can talk and plan, that is not a conversation at all,” the Croatian president clearly states. We have to build a nuclear power plant, Milanović said, adding that when one country attacks another, the whole world gets a bill to pay.

The president also commented on the situation between the USA and Iran. “It’s a symptom of the disease of large systems and large empires when people no longer want to sacrifice themselves for that system,” he stated.
“The European Union is not democratic and when I say that, I don’t necessarily mean that that makes it bad in itself, on;y that it is not democratic – people are appointed to the highest and most important positions by processes that are not democratic, and more and more people see and feel that and that is why more and more of them vote the way they vote,” Milanović warned.
