This Saturday, March 11th another instalment of Pink Day was held in Zagreb. It was the fifth such event, dedicated to those who enjoy rose wines, organized by Women on Wine (WOW) association, traditionally held around March 8th in order to serve as part of the celebrations of International Women’s day in Croatia. Pink Day has a twofold role, to establish the position of high-quality rose wines on the market and also to show that women have an increasingly important role on the Croatian wine scene, both as winemakers and consumers.

The Pink Gala Humanitarian Dinner was held on the eve of the festival, on Friday in the Hotel Esplanade. It was a humanitarian event, with all proceeds going toward a noble goal, helping families who need the help. The menu for the dinner was created by Chef Ana Grgić, it was rose-inspired, as it included smoked salmon, red shrimp cocktail, lamb roast and a pink desert – rhubarb and white chocolate. Those courses were paired with pink sparkling wine by Villa Sandi and Tomac, and still rose wine by Krauthaker, Galić, Batič and Kozlović , and the musical surprise were The Frajle, all-female band well known for creating great atmosphere at their performances.

The next morning, on Saturday, the Pink day started, with around 70 winemakers presenting their rose wines, including several presenters from abroad. In addition to winemakers, olive oil makers (around a dozen of them) also got the opportunity to present their product on this year’s pink day – and they weren’t even forced to colour their oil pink! Three workshops were held during the afternoon, first one by Laure Patry, who talked about various styles of rose wine throughout Europe, then by Heinrich Zehetner, olive oil sommelier who talked about the olive oil, and finally by Jo Ahearne, Master of Wine, who discussed different styles of making rose wine in Croatia.

After the festival was closed, the Pink Afterparty took place in Sherry’s Wines & Bites wine bar, and a lot of rose (and other types as well!) wine was enjoyed, to celebrate another successful Pink Day festival.
