The Hvar wine story is one which is like no other.
2400 years of wine history, with grapes produced uninterrupted since the arrival of the Ancient Greeks, including the historic UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Stari Grad Plain.
More than two millenia which has seen the Greeks, the Romans, the Venetians, the Austro-Hungarians, the deadly phylloxers, and the Soclialists all put their stamp on the Hvar story.
And in a land of 130 indigenous grape varieties, there are several which are indigenous just to the island of Hvar, including Bogdanusa, which literally translates as a ‘gift from God’.
And then there is Plavac. Plavac Mali (or ‘little blue’), a relative of Zinfandel and the pride of Dalmatin reds, with the fabled steep slopes of Hvar’s southern side one of the best places in the world for its production.
There are many rarities to be found here, which makes Hvar one of the world’s most interesting wine regions right now, and the island is home to the oldest certified Plavac Mali vineyard in the world. Just one of its ancient treasures.
And just as the Hvar wine story has its history and its treasures, so too its wines. Join us on a tour of Hvar Island Rarities, a tour of the island’s most intriguing (and rarely available) wines, sampled in the company of the winemakers themselves. Choose from reds and whites, oaked an unoaked, deligthful dessert wines and aceto balsamico. Visit the wineries and sample the increasingly rare but equally brilliant Plavac Mali vintages from 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003 and 2007.
For true wine affecionados, we can go back further in time,
and into the private collections of the winemakers themselves, starting at 250 € per person.
Tour description:
Our glorious tour begins in the ‘’heart of Hvar Island’, the lush vineyards located on the island’s steep south shore cliffs. To get here, we’ll pass though the island’s 1400 meter long stone tunnel and take the dirt track road to finally reach the island’s most important wine region. Once there we will stop at a couple of vineyards in order to get to better know the famous Hvar south shore terroir Then we will continue to one of the wineries that matches your preferences (reds or whites) to taste these special rarities.
The price of this tour is based on the number of courses, wines and rarity that you would like to try. After your tastings, we will return to your hotel, villa or yacht.
Optional wine paired lunch!
As a finishing complement to your sumptuous tasting program, we have also arranged a private wine paired lunch at several of the most prominent island restaurants, starting from 125 EUR per person. The experience includes 6 courses and wines. For more information, please talk to us directly so we can organize this lunch according your food and wine preferences.
Meeting point:
We will pick you up at your hotel, villa, private accommodation, where your boat is moored or meet you at one of our four tour booths in Hvar Town. We will agree on this when the tour is booked.
Departure time:
Mornings between 10 – 12Noon and afternoons 1 – 4PM. This tour can also be arranged at a time that is convenient for you, so please ask us what your unique requirements are and we will be happy to get back to you with the particulars and our price.
End location:
We will end this tour where you wish – at the marina, your hotel, villa or private accommodation. Just let us know..
