You are going to come across wine bars that will brag about the view they have, but rarely will they be as entitled to that selling point as is the Chakula wine bar in Korčula, on the island of Korčula. Located in the Korčula old town, oriented towards the west, the sunset you can experience from this wine bar is probably one of the most spectacular on the Mediterranean, with the sun setting between the island and the Pelješac peninsula. The wine bar was opened in 2016, started working in early May and should be open every year in the period between May and November.
Chakula (that word in Croatian, written as Ćakula, means a chat, a light conversation) is a restaurant and a wine bar. And it is quite a serious restaurant, with extensive menu mostly based on traditional local cuisine, and their signature dish, žrnovski makaruni, proves that point. Žrnovski makaruni are, in fact, hand-made macaroni, traditionally shaped on a long knitting needle in the beef sauce in the village of Žrnovo, a few kilometres away from Korčula. Chakula restaurant and wine bar offers the dish to their customers, but they take it one step further: in the afternoon, on the terrace, you can watch a young lady making the dough and then turning it into the macaroni and if you’re so inclined, you can even try it yourself! There are, of course, other dishes on the menu, some of which are made with the locally caught fish and other seafood. As a side of your wine, you can order pršut (the kind from the inland Dalmatian town of Drniš, which has the long tradition and highest quality), various cheeses including a huge grana padano block of cheese, tapas and bruschetta finger foods.
And the wines? The wine list is also locally oriented, so the wine bar offers mostly the wines made at the southern part of Croatia. So, you already know what that means: they have some great plavac mali, pošip, grk, rukatac made by the best producers in the region. Madirazza winery from Pelješac is the one that is best represented in the wine bar, and here you’ll find almost all of their wines, including their newest addition, the wines inspired by various winds in that part of Dalmatia. And even the house wines are all made by Madirazza although they are offered under the Chakula label. Other notable wineries whose wines you’ll be able to enjoy are Crvik, Antunović, Miloš, Plenković etc. Most wines are offered by the glass, and organized groups can have special tasting events at the wine bar.
