It is the defining symbol of the biggest city in Istria, but far from resting on its past, the Pula Arena – the sixth biggest Roman ampitheatre in the world – is being put to much more creative uses.
Tomorrow will see the opening night of a short European tour of Pink Floyd legend, David Gilmour, who has chosen to start the tour in Croatia in a venue which once served Christians to the lions.
It is the latest high profile event at the Arena, which in addition to music concerts and festivals, has also hosted events as diverse as gladiator fights and even an ice hockey match. All have been successful, carefully managed to ensure no damage is incurred to the ancient structures, and these events have helped propel Pula and the Arena onto the European music destination scene.
