As great supporters of screw caps, we are sorry to see how few Croatian wineries use them. The screw cap, especially for young and fresh wines, is definitely superior to classic wine caps. And those wineries that do use them, mostly use them for lower lines of wine. We managed to compile a list of five somewhat exciting domestic wines using the screw cap.
1. Bolfan Sauvignon Blanc 2015, 90 points, around 80 kuna
Zagorje winemaker Tomislav Bolfan is a pioneer in using screw caps. His Sauvignons are regularly among the best in Croatia. The one from 2015 won a gold medal at the World Sauvignon Championship in Spain, and is equally fresh and aromatic today.
2. Matošević Aura 2016, 88 points, around 70 kuna
This is a very good, crunchy, ultrafresh Chardonnay with a fun, slightly psychedelic label, but also with a certain potential for aging. This year the Matošević aura, full of aroma and taste of green apples, successfully defended us form the tropical heat.
3. Ilok Cellar Graševina 2016, 88 points, 25-35 kuna
This wine is incredible value for money. For a few euros you can buy the Decanter bronze medal. The Ilok Graševina with a screw cap is a light, very clean wine with recognisable aromas of chamomile.
4. Ilok Cellars Traminer 2016, 88 points, around 40 kuna
Another phenomenal value for money. The Traminer is luckily coming into fashion lately. The one from Ilok is by far the best in Croatia, and the screw cap version is light and a fresh interpretation of oily superior Traminers which, luckily, did not lose the aroma drama of this enchanting variety.
5. Medea Malvazija 2016, 86 points, around 40 kuna
This is a very easily recognisable, clean, very drinkable and especially fresh summer Malvazija, which can be consumed in very large quantity, going along quite well with less pretentious seafood meals.
