The latest twist in the Ivo Sanader case – bail rejected.
Ivo Sanader will stay in the Remetinec prison. Vuk Gjuričić, representative of the Bureau for Combating Corruption and Organized Crime, told reporters that the bail has been rejected. Although the journalists were waiting for Sanader’s attorneys to hear their statements, Jadranka Sloković and Čedo Prodanović left the court without a word, reports Index.hr on October 6, 2015.
The court spokesperson Krešimir Devčić gave the following statement. “The Council was guided by the fact that the house in Kozarčeva cannot possibly fulfil the purpose of bail. The defence offered an apartment in the house as a guarantee. But, the house has not been apportioned, and the rest of the house is blocked, so its value is questionable. The other house owned by Sanader’s attorney Suić has been rejected because it does not have necessary permits and the value of the house is also in question”, said Devčić to reporters. He added that the defence can appeal within three days or may at any time propose a new bail.
The panel of the Zagreb County Court decided today on the motion for bail of former prime minister Ivo Sanader, after his defence submitted necessary documents. Sanader’s original guilty verdict was overturned by the Supreme Court on Thursday. His remand prison due to the Fimi Media case was replaced by a bail worth 12.4 million kuna.
“Whatever the court decides, the other party has the right to appeal”, said the court spokesperson Devčić yesterday. The deadline for appeal is three days. The final decision will be made by the Supreme Court which does not have a strictly defined deadline. The former prime minister could leave the prison only after the final decision is made.
If the court had accepted the bail, Sanader would have to promise that we would not try to hide, after which he would be freed from prison where he has spent nearly three years and ten months in total. Due to the risk of flight, Sanader would not be allowed to leave his place of residence, he would be stripped of his passport and he would have to report to court once a month.
Sanader offered to cover the bail with properties owned by his wife Mirjana Sanader and one of his lawyers Goran Suić. He was brought to the rear entrance of the court at around 10.30 am, while his attorneys arrived at the court five minutes before 11 am.
