August 2, 2023 – As Croatia keeps strengthening its profile as a tourist country, some of its different regions are yet to be discovered and developed in that sense. Though this is slowly happening, the Adriatic region still reigns strong, with Istria, Dubrovnik, and the islands leading. Continental Croatia has started catching up, though. The newest success story is that of tourism in northern Croatia.
This is the Krapina-Zagorje County, writes Index. In the first seven months of this year, around 107,000 tourist arrivals were recorded there, with more than 222,000 overnight stays. This is 5.5 percent more compared to the record year 2019, and seven percent more than last year.
Prefect Željko Kolar emphasized this, adding that most guests come from Slovenia, followed by visitors from Poland and Germany. He reports that the number of visitors from Denmark, Belgium, and the Netherlands is also increasing. These guests mostly visit spa and wellness facilities, but there is a growing interest in vacation homes, whose number is increasing daily in this northern Croatian region.

“We fight for every visitor with our content and promotion of the county as a joint destination of Zagorje, a fairy tale in the palm of your hand. This includes the museums of Croatian Zagorje. More than 300,000 people visit our museums annually. We count somewhere around 190,000 arrivals with around 400,000 overnight stays. About 800,000 people visit Marija Bistrica, and the same number of people visit for spa weekend breaks,” said Kolar.
He added that Zagorje, with its good gastronomic and food offer, is recognized as the strongest tourist destination in continental Croatia. He also stated that Zagorje is visited by 48 percent of foreign and 52 percent of domestic tourists and that the number of overnight stays and arrivals is almost balanced.
