August the 12th, 2023 – Zagreb’s Maksimir stadium has unfortunately been ranked the third ugliest football stadium in Europe.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, according to research carried out by the Money agency based on reviews on platforms such as Google, TripAdvisor and Football Ground, Zagreb’s Maksimir stadium was declared the third ugliest stadium in all of Europe.
Maksimir stadium can otherwise officially accommodate 24,851 spectators. Following the devastating earthquake in Zagreb back in March 2020, its eastern stands were closed due to being unusable and unsafe, reports Index.
In the first place comes the Carlo Castellani stadium, where the Italian Empoli plays some of its matches. It is a building that can accommodate 16,800 spectators and boasts stands which are completely separated from each other and are quite far from the field because of an athletics track.
The second ugliest stadium in Europe is (at least according to this list) Balaídos, where Celta Vigo plays its La Liga matches. The Spanish club started working on fixing this stadium, so new stands were built. Celta built the eastern stand, which was opened back in June for a match against Barcelona, and the reconstruction costs increased from 30 to 50 million euros. The western stand is yet to be finished.
