December 23, 2023 – Mateo Kovačić went down in history as the first footballer to win the Club World Cup title with three different clubs.
City went on to beat Brazilian club Fluminense 4:0 in the final in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Friday night. It was his third title in a Manchester City shirt. Before that, Kova won the Club World Cup trophy twice with Real Madrid (2016, 2017) and once with Chelsea (2021).
Until now, he was in the company of eight players who won the trophy with two different clubs, namely Dida (Corinthians, Milan), Danilo (Sao Paulo, Corinthians), Fabio Santos (Sao Paulo, Corinthians), Thiago Alcantara (Barcelona, Bayern Munich), Toni Kroos (Bayern, Real Madrid), Ronaldo (Manchester United, Real Madrid), Xherdan Shaqiri (Bayern Munich, Liverpool), and David Alaba (Bayern Munich, Real Madrid).
It was also Kovačić’s 19th club trophy. With Dinamo, he won two Croatian championships and two Croatian Cups, with Real Madrid he won three Champions League titles, two Club World Cups, two European Super Cups, the Primera Division and the Spanish Super Cup, while playing for Chelsea, he won the Champions League, the Europa League, the Club World Cup, and the European Super Cup. With Manchester City, he has won the European Super Cup and now the Club Wold Cup.
Kovačić also has three medals with the Croatia national team – World Cup silver in 2018, World Cup bronze in 2022, and silver from the Nations League this year.
