February the 1st, 2024 – We didn’t really need anyone else to tell us just how gorgeous Opatija is, but perhaps others do. With Dubrovnik usually taking the global or European glory in Croatia, it’s time for this Kvarner town to step in to the limelight, according to Conde Nast Traveler.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Conde Nast Traveler has never even attempted to dilute its obvious love of Croatia, so it should come as no surprise that another Croatian town has made the list of the most beautiful European cities according to this publication. As B92 writes, alongside picturesque Opatija, two other cities in Croatia’s most immediate region, more specifically in Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, have made the list.
Alongside Opatija are Mostar (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Koper (Slovenia) – three cities with three very different energies and incredible beauty. According to Conde Nast Traveler, these are all places that welcome every visitor in a very special way.
Conde Nast Traveler shines the spotlight on Opatija
Although today it is often overlooked by many international media outlets in favour of cities like Dubrovnik or Split, it’s high time Opatija got some attention. Located in the northern part of the Adriatic as opposed to down in southern and central Dalmatia, Opatija is actually cradle of tourism in Croatia. It’s also known as “Vienna by the sea” because of its stunning Belle Epoque architecture. The Opatija Riviera, a belt located between the wooded slopes of the nearby mountains and the rugged coast of Kvarner Bay, was once the most visited summer resort of the former elites.
Kvarner Bay is a haven for health and wellness due to its unique micro-climate that offers ideal conditions for therapeutic and regenerative trips, meaning that Opatija also attracts tourists with tempting treatments in modern spa centres.
According to Conde Nast Traveler, just as the wider Opatija area is a combination of sea and mountains, so is the visual experience of different styles. The meeting of sumptuous Central European elegance, Mediterranean charm and medieval architecture make Opatija an ideal romantic destination.
