February the 11th, 2024 – Makarska is planning to place video surveillance at its waste disposal sites this year, as well as introduce the automatic detection of the illegal parking of vehicles.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, in the first quarter of this year, the City of Makarska intends to start the public procurement process for the placement of video surveillance at its waste disposal sites. In addition, they’re planning to realise the automatic detection of illegal parking, as reported by Makarska danas/today.
Something similar was introduced last year elsewhere in Dalmatia, more specifically in the ancient city of Šibenik. That popular coastal Croatian gem introduced a system worth 14 million kuna, which is approximately 1.9 million euros, and installed 240 new cameras as part of it.
The City of Makarska estimated the cost of the introduction of its own system and video surveillance at 158.4 thousand euros plus VAT, or almost 200 thousand euros in total. The duration of the contract currently stands at 36 months.
If the public procurement procedure is carried out by the end of March, it is realistic to expect that Makarska could enter the summer tourist season with Big Brother watching over the streets. It’s worth explaining that these aren’t just any old camera. This modern equipment involves very highly sophisticated cameras and a system that the mayor had already announced earlier on. The experience of the City of Šibenik thus far has shown that these cameras are effective in traffic accidents and getting rid of illegally parked vehicles, often on pavements as well.
In order for everything to be in accordance with the law, people must be warned by law about the fact that there is filming taking place in public areas, and when everything is finished, notice boards will be put up along the streets.
As one of the important motives for the introduction of video surveillance in Makarska is the control of landfill sites. Many people are still engaging in fly-tipping and dumping their waste in areas not designated for that and ruining the surrounding environment. These new cameras will hopefully put a stop to such illegal practices in and around the Makarska area.
