March the 2nd, 2024 – The mayor has announced that some changes are coming for a Zagreb tram interchange that has had absolutely no work done on it since 1948.
As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, the City of Zagreb is finally set to begin with the renovation and general revamp of the Mihaljevac tram interchange, which hasn’t been renovated since its construction in 1948.
“The new terminal will be twice as big as the old terminal was, and after the completion of the works, a larger number of trams will be able to run towards the starting station of the cable car. The works are expected to start within one month, with their expected completion being the end of this year. The estimated value of the construction is about 3 million euros,” said the Mayor of the City of Zagreb, Tomislav Tomašević.
Traffic during the works
As these works are carried out, buses will run instead of trams along the stretch between the Mihaljevac roundabout and Draškovićeva Ulica. “In cooperation with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure, the City of Zagreb secured 85% non-refundable EU co-financing for this project, given that it’s an important matter – building new tram infrastructure,” said Deputy Mayor Luka Korlaet.
What are the plans?
The planned revamping of the terminal includes all traffic areas of the terminal, as well as the construction of a new tram line and platforms. There will also be a new contact and cable network, a new drainage system, a new bus terminal, a car park for taxis and vehicles for people with reduced mobility, new pedestrian paths, a bike shelter, a turning point for the vehicles, as well as horticultural landscaping and the expansion of surrounding green areas.
An additional starting track will be built along the tram part of the terminal, as will all of the new facilities for the accommodation of ZET employees, ticket sales, and the accommodation of transport users.
