March the 21st, 2024 – Croatian geothermal potential has been at the fore over more recent years, with an unbelievable number of sources having been found.
As Poslovni Dnevnik/Josipa Ban writes, thanks to the data and various analyses of the Agency for Hydrocarbons, Croatian geothermal potential has been making headlines. That geothermal potential has been proven in approximately 200 wells, as revealed by Martina Tuschl, Director of the Sector for Geothermal Energy at the Agency for Hydrocarbons.
She also revealed the fact that currently, 28 exploration permits have been issued to explore the potential of numerous geothermal wells throughout the country. This massive investment in research, she explained, will depend on the depth of each of these wells and will be more expensive if the well in question is deeper, and cheaper if it is shallower. The price of researching an exploratory well stands anywhere between 10 and 15 million euros.
When it comes to Croatian geothermal potential, the exploration and then the eventual production of energy from sources is regulated by the Law on Exploration and Exploitation of Hydrocarbons, then by the Decree on Compensation for Exploration and Exploitation of Hydrocarbons. Then (of course), by several other ordinances.
“Even though it may look a little bit unsettling, the Republic of Croatia is perceived across the European Union (EU) as a country that has a very well-organised research and exploitation process of geothermal energy,” pointed out Tuschl. She added that the tendering procedure for the exploration of Croatian geothermal potential is also extremely well organised.
“When an investor comes and carries out all the activities related to that type of research, they automatically receive a permit for extraction, that is, they can be absolutely sure that they will be able to take their investment to the exploitation phase,” concluded Tuschl.
